Confirmed: Greece boss Gus Poyet calls up Celtic hero Giorgos Giakoumakis yet again

Giorgos Giakoumakis has capped off his 17-goal season at Celtic with back-to-back Greece call-ups after Gus Poyet announced him as part of next month’s squad.

Greece have a 4-fixture schedule coming up in June – all of which will be Nations League games. Indeed, Poyet’s side will face trips to Northern Ireland and Kosovo before hosting Cyprus and Kosovo again. All of this within an 11-day period with the action kicking off on June 2nd.

It’s a huge boost for Giakoumakis who made a positive impression in Poyet’s first squad as Greece boss back in March. So much so that the Hoops forward has been invited back after it was confirmed at the end of the week:

Giakoumakis managed to fire home 16 goals in 2022 as part of his 17-goal campaign in what’s been an electric year for the former VVV-Venlo star [Transfermarkt].

The forward played 72 minutes against Romania and another 29 against Montenegro in 2 friendly matches back in March. Those appearances were his first for his country in just under a year as he now looks to build on the momentum gained from this season.

Greece won’t be participating in the World Cup in Qatar at the end of 2022, meaning Giakoumakis should be free to go with Celtic on their Sydney Cup venture.

Greece boss Gus Poyet sends out the call for Giorgos Giakoumakis

The international fixtures, which kick off in just under a fortnight, give the likes of Giakoumakis a great chance to end the season on an international high.

This season, Giorgos has managed to secure the Premiership title, the League Cup, played in Europe, and secured automatic qualification into the UCL for next season. The only thing that’s missing for him is a goal on the international stage to go with his call-ups.

It’s yet more vindication of Giakoumakis’ decision to move to Glasgow last summer. Whilst the Scottish Premiership isn’t regarded as one of Europe’s top leagues, it’s clear international opportunities are there to be had for those who perform well. Josip Juranovic, Carl Starfelt, and Cameron Carter-Vickers are just several of the current Celtic squad to be called up by their countries.

Celtic supporters certainly have plenty of players to keep an eye on over the summer international schedule. We’ll be looking for as many of them to come back to pre-season buzzing with their exploits as possible.

It remains to be seen whether Poyet decides to make Giakoumakis his first choice or not in the current camp. He’ll be up against the likes of AZ Alkmaar’s Vangelis Pavlidis and Utrecht’s Anastasios Douvikas respectively.

As with the rest of the Celtic international contingent, we wish Giorgos all the very best this summer.
