Watford have this evening completed the signing of Celtic goalkeeper Vincent Angelini, subject to international clearance.

Angelini was part of the youth ranks at Parkhead, but the 17-year-old never made a senior appearance for the Hoops.

The goalkeeper has signed a two-year contract down in London with an option for a third year. He’ll be immediately assigned to the under-23 squad in the Hornets’ Academy.

Watford claim that the youngster was “highly sought after” before signing for the club. In recent months, he’s been linked with the likes of AC Milan and Manchester United [Pianeta Milan].

Angelini signed his first professional contract back in 2019 with the Hoops. He’s also the grandson of former Celtic player and manager Davie Hay.

Watford confirm Celtic youngster Vincent Angelini in another academy blow

It’s clear that Celtic saw something in Angelini. At 17, there was plenty of time for him to realise his potential at Parkhead.

Then again, he may have looked at the names ahead of him and felt otherwise. Whatever way you look at it, it’s another blow for the academy.

You can add Angelini’s name to the ever-growing list of top talents we’ve allowed to slip through our grasp. It’s difficult to put your finger on why this keeps happening, but it’s a trend. It’s also something Postecoglou has promised to stop.

The path from development team to first-team still seems blurry. There doesn’t feel like there’s a clear route to follow. That’s something that will irritate so many of our top-performing youngsters who may feel they’re ready for progression.

We now have a manager who looks ready to give those players their opportunities to prove it. In addition to that, we’re still growing our youth ranks through some solid signings from England. But for now, we’ll have to reflect on the Angelini departure with yet more disapointment.
