Confusion over report of alleged new Celtic appointment

This morning, a very interesting report emerged via The Scottish Sun regarding Celtic being ‘close’ to a move for former Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool employee Steve Hitchen.

Described as having mutual friends with Ange Postecoglou, the report stated that the experienced scout and director of football Hitchen had recently visited Celtic Park to watch the team in action.

It was said he could be used in an advisory role, helping with Celtic’s transfer work. However, the report has since been taken down, with the original link now displaying a ‘Sorry, page unavailable’ message. The tweet promoting the story still remains online at the time of publishing.

It’s unclear why the story has been removed or if it will return at a later time.

For what it’s worth, the story also appeared in today’s print edition of The Scottish Sun on Sunday [16/10, page 68].

Since then, fan group The Cynic have reported that Hitchen isn’t in line for a post at the Bhoys.

Celtic made a big behind-the-scenes appointment earlier this year with Mark Lawwell arriving at the club with the job title of Head of First Team Scouting and Recruitment.

It’s long been wondered whether a director of football will also arrive at the club to oversee significant structural change that offers consistency even in the event of management changes.

At this point, it seems unlikely Hitchen will be that man, or even be involved with the club in any capacity.
