Reported Celtic target Connor Barron has a massive opportunity on his hands to potentially win a Parkhead move next month as Aberdeen prepare for opening day.

The Hoops have reportedly had him watched after his recent appearances for Scotland under-21s. It’s said that Ange Postecoglou specifically had been impressed with the young midfielder last season [Daily Express].

That’s no surprise either. At only 19 years of age, Barron showed fearless energy in the middle of the part for the Dons last term. He bagged 15 senior appearances for Aberdeen in the second half of the campaign after spending the first on loan with Kelty Hearts.

And now, he faces the very realistic prospect of starting against the best midfield in the country at Celtic Park on July 31st. The game marks flag day for the Hoops, and many will be expecting Postecoglou’s men to run amok over Jim Goodwin’s Pittodrie side.

For Barron himself, he would be up against the likes of Reo Hatate, Matt O’Riley, and of course Callum McGregor. At the moment, there’s not a tougher task for a midfielder in Scottish football.

If he can show up well against that level of opposition and ensure Aberdeen have some form of presence in the middle of the park, he’ll catch the eye of the Celtic support.

Connor Barron can give his Celtic chances a major boost next month

There’s no way this isn’t something Barron is thinking about. The youngster will know fine well that Celtic are reportedly interested in his signature. It’ll be at the forefront of his mind ahead of the opening game of the season too.

Granted, that will only be the case if he is indeed still at Pittodrie when the campaign begins. As well as Celtic, EPL side Brentford are also said to be interested [Football Scotland].

It would be surprising to see the youngster move before the season begins however. He still has plenty to prove. With the transfer window open until the end of August, his performance at Celtic Park could catch the attention of not only the manager but also the supporters too.

The same goes for Tyrhys Dolan who is coming to Parkhead for a friendly match with Blackburn next month. He’s been linked with Celtic and would apparently only cost between £2m – £3m [TalkSPORT]. Granted, Football Scotland have since dismissed that idea.

It’ll be fascinating to see how he does against the calibre of player already at Celtic Park. He can certainly expect the toughest challenge he’s ever faced in senior football. That is of course if Goodwin actually starts him like he did towards the end of last season.

It might be early days, but Barron has a monumental opportunity on his hands here. Let’s see what he’s got in his locker.
