One of the aspects of Sunday’s Glasgow derby that has not been remarked upon that much is the performance of Celtic’s veteran right-back, Mikael Lustig.
Lustig turned in an excellent display in the Hoops’ 2-1 victory. His performance was far better than it was in the 1-0 loss to Rangers at Ibrox in December.
A solid performance

He was solid in the challenge, and managed to stifle Rangers danger man Ryan Kent well. Indeed, Kent only started to have an impact on the game when he moved into the middle of the park.

So good was Lustig’s performance, that he could well have earned himself a new contract at Celtic. The player’s deal expires at the end of the season, and as yet no new deal has been agreed.
In talks over new deal

However, interim boss Neil Lennon did reveal last week that Lustig was one of a number of players the Hoops were in contract talks with.
Lustig’s performance against Rangers has certainly strengthened his case for a new deal. Lennon obviously has faith in the player, and Lustig repaid it in the Glasgow derby.
As the season reaches its climax, you would imagine that Lustig’s future will be sorted in the next few weeks.
The chances of him staying to help the Hoops go for nine in a row may have increased dramatically following his derby performance.
