Could Celtic duo play on Thursday ahead of training return?

Celtic’s injured duo of Mikey Johnston and Nir Bitton could return to training tomorrow.

Neil Lennon confirmed that both men will be back at his pre-match press conference for Hibernian on Friday. Johnston hasn’t played since the 2-0 win at Ibrox, just like Bitton.

Both men have also been missed in recent weeks. Johnston hasn’t had anyone claim his jersey since he dropped out of the squad. Mohamed Elyounoussi, Lewis Morgan, and Scott Sinclair have all featured. In fairness to Sinky, of course, he’s only had short cameos since returning over the last week.

However, as for Elyounoussi and Morgan, neither have won Johnston’s place off of him. If Johnston is fit enough to play against Cluj on Thursday, it would be no surprise if Lenny threw him in.

Neil leaves doubt as to whether both men will definitely return

The Celtic boss, of course, has only stated that he’s “hoping” both men return tomorrow. However, it’s more than likely that they will. Lenny will know how far they are along, and could also have them in mind for Thursday.

Having an extra jersey at the back in Nir Bitton also isn’t a bad thing either. The Israeli has proved himself to be more than capable at centre-back this summer. He produced a stunning performance at Ibrox before he picked up his knock.

Whilst Bitton starting the game against Cluj is unlikely, there’s nothing odd about him potentially being an option from the bench.

You have to imagine that both Kristoffer Ajer and Christopher Jullien will be the main partnership. But outside of that, we’re lacking in natural central defenders. Bitton may not be one of those, but he’s adapted to the position so well. Hatem Abd Elhamed is another option, but he’s naturally a right-back and has been signed as such.

A solid boost for the club

Potentially having both Johnston and Bitton back in training tomorrow is a terrific boost for the club. And, with a bit of luck, both men can push to be in the 18 for the Europa League contest vs Cluj this week.

Lenny won’t want to rush either of course. Given the struggles we’ve had at left-mid, Johnston has to be allowed the time to make sure he’s fully over his injury. The same goes for Bitton, although our lack of cover at centre-back could see him rushed back into match-day squads.

Hopefully, everything goes smoothly and both men return to training on Monday. At that stage, we can hopefully look forward to them returning to the squad for Thursday night, regardless of whether that’s optimistic or not.
