Former Celtic manager Ronny Deila’s appointment as manager of MLS side New York City FC recently certainly came out of the blue.
The former Hoops title winner has now landed a high-profile job after a few years of relative obscurity. What will be interesting now, is if any of his former Celtic players decide to make the move to join him in New York.
There is one player that springs to mind as an ideal candidate. He was one of Deila’s key men in his two-year spell in Glasgow. That player is Celtic goalkeeper Craig Gordon.
Unlikely to regain first-team spot

There are a few reasons why Gordon is an ideal candidate to move to the MLS. For a start, it is highly unlikely he is going to regain his place in the Celtic starting line-up anytime soon. He is behind Fraser Forster in the pecking order, and possibly Scott Bain too.
Secondly, his contract expires at the end of the season. The player himself has even recently confirmed that he hasn’t had any talks about extending his time at the club.
One last big move?

Gordon is 37, so you imagine that any move he makes after leaving the Hoops will be the last of his career. That might well be a reunion with Deila.
If Gordon can get regular football with New York City FC, then it is a move that should be explored by all parties. As has been outlined above, it is highly unlikely that Gordon will be given a new contract by Celtic.
Therefore, a move to America could be one of the options that the player has in the summer. Deila and Gordon had success together at Celtic. They helped the Hoops win two league titles together. Perhaps the duo can repeat the success they had in Scotland in the MLS, it would be what the duo deserves.
