Craig Gordon media interview provokes negative reaction from some Celtic fans

Goalkeeper Craig Gordon has lifted the lid on contract negotiations with Celtic, revealing to radio station talkSPORT that he hasn’t been happy with the way they’ve been handled.

The veteran shot-stopper is currently a free agent following the expiration of his deal at the Hoops and isn’t training with Neil Lennon’s squad at Lennoxtown.

Confirming that he is also in discussions with Hearts about a return to his boyhood team, Gordon was critical of the Scottish champions.

Speaking to talkSPORT, he said: “The negotiations haven’t been particularly good, I’ve got to be honest. It has dragged out and I feel it could have been handled an awful lot better.

“I don’t want to say too much on that. I had a fantastic time there over the six years and still want to be able to speak to them and see what they have to offer and what they’re thinking my role would be next season if they want me to stay there.

“So there is still a little bit more chat to be had there to see exactly what they’re looking for. But yes, I would have liked things to have been sorted out before now with them.”

The criticism here is a little unnecessary and Celtic aren’t really a club that enjoys drama playing out in public, even if there’s a legitimate grievance.

If Gordon feels he’s been hard done by then I’m sure that could have been communicated with the club in private rather than on a national radio station.

As a third-choice goalkeeper, he’s hardly in the greatest negotiating position anyway. Another year’s contract sounds like a generous offer from the club even on reduced terms.

Ultimately if he feels the offer from Hearts, dropping down a division, is better he’s free to take it.

It’s fair to say his comments have prompted negativity from some supporters this evening, feeling he’s taken unnecessary jabs at the club.
