Former Celtic man Moussa Dembélé has been congratulated on Instagram by former and current Bhoys.

The Brendan Rodgers signing could end up costing new club Atlético Madrid more than €33m (Goal), with bonuses and add-ons potentially costing Simeone’s side another €5m+.

Dembélé, who spent two very successful years at Celtic, has remained a fan favourite. His goalscoring prowess delighted the Celtic faithful, being the first Bhoy to net a league hat-trick against Rangers since Stevie Chalmers (BBC). His departure left a sour note, with social media at the forefront (Daily Mail).

After moving to Lyon in 2018, the Frenchman scored 45 goals and set up 13 (Transfermarkt). Moving on loan initially, Moussa has generated plenty of headlines after sealing a deal to join Atlético Madrid.

Playing next to Joao Felix and Luis Suarez, Diego Simeone’s side have an embarrassment of attacking riches. Former Rojiblancos icon Diego Costa cancelled his contract at the Wanda Metropolitano, meaning that a striker was a priority for Simeone.

Celtic players old and new congratulate Moussa Dembélé

Celtic players old and new have joined with the choruses of support on Instagram. Moussa’s namesake Karamoko Dembélé commented “time to shine”, while Odsonne Edouard dedicated a story to his former strike partner.

Dedryk Boyata left the customary flame emojis on Dembélé’s post, while Scott Sinclair said: “congrats my man!!! Goals!!!”. Lesser-seen Celts such as Charley Musonda and Eboue Kouassi also joined in the fun, offering their support.

Dembélé, signed from Fulham for a small fee in 2016 (Daily Record), hit the net 51 times for the Bhoys. A big-game player, he was especially clinical in games against Rangers, as well as scoring a fantastic bicycle kick against Manchester City in the Champions League.

Dembélé’s move to Madrid may set off a chain of events that involve Celtic more directly. Lyon immediately moved for Leicester City exile Islam Slimani, and will be looking for attacking options. Brendan Rodgers’ Foxes have been consistently linked with Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard.
