Banik Ostrava have invited Celtic great Lubomir Moravcik to their pre-season friendly with the Hoops scheduled for July 13th.

Celtic have been invited to face the Czech outfit in a special challenge match to celebrate their 100th year in operation. Organisers have explained that they chose the Hoops as they believe the two clubs’ supporters share similar values [FCB].

The game will take place after Celtic’s training camp in Austria, where more pre-season fixtures will be played against as of yet unnamed sides.

And Lubo, who played against Banik during his days with Nitra, has carried out an interview with the club ahead of the July date.

Speaking via Banik’s official website when asked whetehr he will attend, Lubo said: “If all goes well, I’d love to. Because I think it will be one great experience. I really appreciate the invitation from Baník.

“I may surprise you, but I still have Baník in my memory from a much earlier time. As a boy, I admired the team from the Gusta Antalík era that won titles, beat Bayern in the European Cups. It was a very famous team and I always watched it on TV. When I later played against Baník, I must say that very often I was not happy about the success. I don’t think I scored a single point with Nitra at Bazaly.”

Lubo Moravcik set to make special appearance for Celtic pre-season date

Lubo was of course a regular back in his day for the Czechoslovakia national team. Therefore, you can see the relevance he has with Banik even if he didn’t play for the club.

It’s a classy gesture from the Czech side and it’s no wonder they’re looking to make a big occasion of it. Facing off against a club of Celtic’s stature isn’t an everday occurrence for them. That it marks their 100th year in existence too? You can see why they’re rolling out the red carpet.

Celtic look to have a substantial pre-season schedule ahead of them, but the occasion against Banik will provide a nice change of pace. The game will still be looked at as an opportunity to get more players minutes ahead of the new season, but the atmosphere is set to be a celebratory one.

After the game against Ostrave, Celtic will return back to Scotland as they prepare for two final friendlies against English opposition. The Hoops will host Blackburn Rovers and Norwich City on July 16th and 23rd respectively.

The Premiership season will then kick-off on Saturday 30th July. So it’ll all come back around quickly again for Ange Postecoglou’s men.

And as we get closer and closer to the contest with Banik, you can clearly see the excitement levels are cranking up in the Czech Republic.
