Former Celtic coach Damien Duff has revealed he tried to sign for the club as a winger in 2009, speaking to interview outlet Open Goal this week.

Duff enjoyed a successful year at the Hoops as a first-team coach but recently left to return to his homeland for family reasons.

It now appears his association with Celtic could have been a much longer and fruitful affair, had the former Republic of Ireland international got his way over ten years ago when he left Newcastle United.

Duff had only just turned 30 and was about to embark on a new chapter of his career. It was Celtic he turned to.

However, it appears the Hoops decided not to pursue the player.

A new dawn beckons for Celtic in Europe, as Joe Hart shows his class once again

As quoted by Open Goal, Duff explained: “I offered my services, but I never had the chance [to sign for Celtic].

“When I left Newcastle I was 29 or 30 and I needed a spark again in my career. I needed to go and I remember contacting Celtic.

“Back then it was probably a fax. There was no texts or iPhones. My agent contacted them, it was probably Peter. I’ll need to ring him and see if he turned me down.

“My fee to go to Fulham was £2.5million so needless to say they would’ve got a bargain.”

Duff would go on to play for another five years in the English Premier League, making 173 appearances for the London club.

He scored 22 goals and assisted 30 times during that spell, a pretty good record for a veteran winger at the elite level, especially for £2.5m.

The former Chelsea man also featured heavily on Fulham’s way to the Europa League final in his debut season, where they lost out to Atletico Madrid in 2010.

No doubt he’d have been an effective presence in the Celtic team at the time and may have even ended up playing for Neil Lennon when he took charge after the Tony Mowbray debacle.

Sadly, it was not meant to be!
