Celtic’s 2-0 Europa League loss to Cluj won’t live long in the memory. What is potentially more interesting for Hoops fans are some comments made by Cluj manager Dan Petrescu after the game.
His comments concerned Cluj striker Billel Omrani. Omrani was linked with a move to Celtic in the summer. GSP in Romaina reported that the Hoops bid £3 million for the player after he impressed in the Champions League meeting between the teams in August.
Now his manager at Cluj has said that if a big enough offer for the player is made, Cluj won’t stand in the player’s way if he wants to leave.
“I don’t know for sure if it’s true. I don’t think anyone has contacted the club” Petrescu said, as reported by the Daily Record.
“We don’t blame any player”
“Maybe it’s speculation. But we don’t blame any player who receives a big offer if they leave here.”
It does seem highly likely that Celtic will move for a striker in the January transfer window. Will Omrani be that player? Only time will tell.
He was excellent in Cluj’s 4-3 win at Celtic Park in August, scoring twice. However, he didn’t really make much of an impact in either of the Europa League meetings between the teams.
Scored double figures this season
So far this season the player has scored 13 goals in 27 games, which is a decent return. However, six of those goals were in Champions League qualifying at the start of the season, which perhaps skews the numbers.
Neil Lennon has now had the chance to see the player in action against the Hoops four times this season, so he is well-placed to decide if the striker could make an impact for the club.
There does seem to be a chance that the player could join Celtic if the money is right for Cluj. That all depends though, on Celtic making an offer for the player.
