Match of the Day pundit Danny Murphy has declared that he was “always Celtic” in his younger days, as he also praised Hoops boss Neil Lennon for being a “great lad”.

The former Liverpool and Fulham midfielder was speaking on talkSPORT’s ‘Sports Breakfast‘ (9th Jan 2020, 8am) as he revealed that his loyalties were a little split in the Premiership due to having an affiliation with both Glasgow managers.

“To be honest I was always Celtic,” Murphy revealed. “I had a Celtic and Liverpool half and half scarf when I was a kid.

“You go past that little bit of loyalty. I like to see people I know do well. When I first got in the Crewe team, Neil Lennon protected me like a guardian angel. He used to say to me, ‘Stay out of trouble, I’ll get you the ball’.

“He was brilliant at that level by the way, and what a great lad. I love Lenny.

“I like watching teams that play good football, which Celtic and Rangers do, I think it’s great for Scottish football that the competitive edge is back.

“And I also think it will go to the wire. I think it’s going to be fascinating. I like the way that Stevie has conducted himself.”

Murphy is right about title race, but Celtic should still have the edge

It is interesting to hear the Scotttish ‘title race’ being spoken about so often down south. Perhaps it’s the lack of a genuine fight in their own top-flight, or maybe it’s the growing influence of ourselves and Rangers in Europe. Whatever the reason, it can only be positive for our game.

Like Murphy, many are tipping the title to “go to the wire” and it’s hard to argue against that at the moment. Both sides have dropped so few points, and the rest of the league is so poor, that many more wins are expected for both.

But Rangers have more questions to answer than us. We’ve proven that we know how to win league titles over the past eight years. In that time they’ve won absolutely nothing of note. I know who I’d be backing, even if Murphy doesn’t.
