Former Manchester United favourite Darren Fletcher has backed Celtic boss Neil Lennon’s claim that the title belongs to the Parkhead side should the season finish early.
Lennon stated on Friday that Celtic should be crowned nine-in-a-row champions if the season was to end immediately due to the recent global health crisis.
The Parkhead side currently sit 13 points clear at the top of the Premiership, with everything remaining up in the air ahead of tomorrow’s UEFA call with all 55 member nations.

However, speaking to Football Daily on BBC Radio 5 Live (14/03), former Premier League star Fletcher was 100% behind the Celtic manager.
“I can see where Neil Lennon’s [coming from], and we spoke about it before. Every club is going to be biased towards whatever situation they are in. In the eventually of an Armageddon and it doesn’t [finish] then Celtic would rightly be declared champions because of their points total [and] how much they are ahead.
“We should respect any decision that is made, but the chances of that happening are very slim because there are going to be court cases and arguments.
“They have got big things like history being made. Celtic are on the verge of nine in a row for the third time ever. And potentially carrying that into next season for the first-ever team to win 10 in a row that’s all the conversations that are going on right now.”
There is no precedent here
It’s a totally bizarre scenario we find ourselves in with no football to talk about and no fixture to look forward to. However, unfortunately, there’s no set precedent that the authorities can look back on.
UEFA’s call tomorrow will be interesting. It’s worth noting that they can’t command leagues to do anything. UEFA doesn’t control what happens in Scottish football, for example. However, it would be surprising if there wasn’t a universal agreement on a way forward for domestic competitions.
It’s like Fletcher says – if you’re a Celtic fan then you want the league to either be given to you or to finish off a campaign that you’re going to be crowned champions in. If you’re a Rangers or Hearts fan, you want a null and void to avoid disaster.

This is why the associations can’t listen to what clubs think about the matter. We all have our own personal decisions on what’s the fairest way to do things. But unfortunately, we don’t all come to the same conclusion.
Goodness knows Scottish football and the supporters could do with a route forward. We want to know which way our country is going. At the moment there’s far too much uncertainty and a lack of clarity on the game’s standing.
However, Fletcher is just the latest name to come out fighting in the Celtic manager’s corner.
