Dave King is now taunting Dermot Desmond, Peter Lawwell and Celtic; that’s how bad things are

Former Rangers chairman and current largest shareholder, Dave King, has laid down a challenge for Celtic to respond to a ‘resurgence’ at Ibrox, The Daily Record reports.

King is doing the media rounds this week after announcing his intention to sell his shares to an Ibrox fan group.

Inevitably the questions turned to Celtic and the way we have allowed our city rivals back into the Scottish Premiership trophy hunt.

King told The Daily Record: “Celtic are still coming from a position where they have resources.

“It is really going to be up to the Celtic investors to react to the Rangers’ resurgence.

“We are in a strong position and we are well funded and we would be going from strength to strength.

“The question is what would be the reaction of the current Celtic’s shareholders to that? At the moment, I can certainly see it being more balanced over the next couple of years.”

This is the depths we have sunk to, taunted by an Ibrox figure once derided and mocked by Celtic fans. Yet, what he says isn’t untrue. How competitive Rangers are is largely up to us.

The direction of Celtic right now is a mystery.

The club can’t even get a handle on its relationship with its own support, nevermind its leaders having the collective vision to look ahead with strategy and optimism.

Fans will be hoping that King’s appearance in the media will spark Dermot Desmond and Peter Lawwell into action.

A popular legend in recent years amongst supporters has been a story of the scenes at Hampden in the wake of Ronny Deila’s side being humbled by the then Scottish Championship ranked Rangers in 2016.

It’s said that Desmond, in attendance, was so upset with the celebrations of the Ibrox directors that day, he decided to push the boat out and bring in Brendan Rodgers (Scottish Daily Mail).

The Invincibles followed.

Perhaps this kind of jab from King in the press can jolt the money man into action once again and bring Premier League, elite-level standards back to Celtic Park and Lennoxtown.

More likely, that is just wishful thinking.

It sums up the current state of affairs that I am more worried about Celtic beating St Johnstone tomorrow, than where we’ll be in 5 years.
