Rangers chairman Dave King has claimed his club are on par with Celtic in many respects but has noted one of the key advantages we have over the Ibrox outfit, The Scotsman report.
King announced his intention to resign from his chairman post during yesterday’s Rangers AGM.
As you’d expect he touched on a wide variety of subjects and had a thing or two to say about Celtic too.
He believes his side have made great strides in recent years and falling short of praising the Hoops too much, does appear to admire one aspect of our business – player trading.
As quoted by The Scotsman, he said: “If you look at the revenue streams, the commercials sales, season ticket sales, we’re pretty much the same as Celtic.
“If you take where we were five years ago and where their commercial revenues were, remember we were in the Championship, right now we are exactly there with them.
“The advantage Celtic have got at the moment is they’ve had a good track record of player trading.”
Second to none
King’s belief that Rangers are ‘pretty much the same’ as Celtic in many areas off the pitch is probably a major stretch in the viewpoint of Hoops supporters, myself included, but it is interesting that he has to admit we hold a significant power advantage when it comes to transfers.
Our recruitment cycle over the last few years has been something to, mostly, celebrate.
A few cases of dodgy forward planning aside, the sale of players such as Kieran Tierney and Moussa Dembele has generated massive revenue, with the team still strong enough to win an unprecedented ‘treble treble’ of trophies.
The efforts have allowed us to compete at a different level to our rivals on the pitch and off the pitch. Clearly that’s something King will be hoping changes.
However, with all our major playing assets incredibly secure and Lennon’s team motoring on matchday, he could be waiting a while yet.
