Former Celtic manager Davie Hay has accepted that Hoops are all but out of the Europa League. The Bhoys were convincingly beaten 2-0 in the first leg at Celtic Park.  And Hay doesn’t hold up much hope for a comeback.

“It is a tie that now has the look of a formality with the La Liga side fully expected to ease into the last 16 of the tournament.” he told the Evening Times.

“I can understand the mindset of the Celtic players and the manager because as players you always have to think that nothing is impossible. But realistically, I just don’t see it happening.”

Celtic thoroughly outclassed

The fact that the Hoops were so thoroughly outclassed in the first leg means that most supporters will agree with Hay’s view. Celtic failed to create any real chances in a very flat display.

There is one intriguing aspect to the second leg. Brendan Rodgers could decide to give some of his squad players a run out.

Second leg could see changes

Nir Bitton could be a contender to start, and perhaps Kieran Tierney could make his long-awaited return from injury. Craig Gordon could even return in goal, if Scott Bain is rested.

Most fans’ attention will now turn to Sunday’s game against Kilmarnock, which is far more important than the second leg.

The Hoops are still in the middle of a title race, whilst the Europa League prospects look bleak.
