David Turnbull has now opened up on his final six months at Celtic before making a switch to Cardiff City in January.

The 24-year-old attacking midfielder signed for the Hoops in 2020 from Motherwell in what was a dream transfer for him at the time.

But towards the end of his Celtic career, regular starting opportunities were getting hard to come by and in the end he moved to Cardiff for £2m last month.

Turnbull showed some terrific form across the first part of the current campaign and at one point was enjoying a streak of scoring four goals in six consecutive games in November [Transfermarkt].

He benefitted from Reo Hatate’s injury worries at the beginning of the campaign and showed he was a goal-scoring threat from midfield with his long-range shooting ability.

But Turnbull was never a consistent starter and he felt it was the right time to move on from Parkhead and forge out the next part of his career someplace else.

Turnbull’s contract was due to run out in the summer anyway so his move to Wales does seem like a perfect fit for all parties concerned.

David Turnbull, who made his EFL Championship debut for Cardiff City against Watford recently, has now been looking back on the end of his Celtic stint and provided an honest admission.

He said: “I think it was the right time for me [to move on]. I had a great time at Celtic, a great three and a half years, and I loved every minute of it.

“But maybe the last six months to a year hasn’t been the way I wanted it. To come to a team like Cardiff is a great move for myself. It’s about trying to replicate some things I have done before and putting my own style on to the team.

“At the start of the season I was playing games and after that fell away a wee bit. Sometimes in football that happens. Whether it is down to other things I am not sure, but I leave Celtic happy with a lot of my time there and it’s time to come on to new things now.”
