David Turnbull has opened up about the reason behind his goal celebration on Wednesday against St Mirren.
David Turnbull has revealed the role that criticism played in his goal celebration against St Mirren on Wednesday night, with the Hoops midfielder scoring in consecutive matches in the Scottish Premiership for the first time since December 2020.
Turnbull said: [Daily Record], “I’ve scored a goal and I was obviously delighted, but sometimes you do, boys get a bit of criticism here and there and you try and block it out as much as you can. So that’s all I was trying to do.
“Every game I play, I want to give my all and try to create chances and score chances for the team and that is what I will try to do.
“I was pleased and pleased with the goal, obviously. In terms of my performance, I felt I did well. I just tried to create chances and get on the ball. Ross County were tough to break down, but we got there in the end and it was a comfortable victory.”
Turnbull was also questioned about his contract situation with the Hoops as his current deal is set to expire in the summer of 2024. Unlike several of his teammates, including Callum McGregor, Kyogo Furuhashi, Daizen Maeda, Reo Hatate, and Matt O’Riley, who have already agreed to contract extensions this season, Turnbull has not reached an extension agreement yet. The Scotsman remains relaxed about his future though, and is instead concentrating on on-field matters, like getting consistent game time.
Turnbull said: “To be honest, I just leave it to the club and those that are involved with it.”
The Hoops midfielder is also aware that consistently playing and scoring for Celtic will only bolster his chances of returning to the Scottish national team, especially as injuries have prevented him from playing for the national team since July 2022, against Armenia.
