Davie Hay doesn’t think Filip Benkovic will return to Celtic

With the signing of £7 million centre-back Christopher Jullien, Celtic seem to have solved the issue of who will play at centre-back next season.

At this moment in time, it will be Jullien and either Kristoffer Ajer, or Jozo Simunovic.

There could be another aspect that can be drawn from Jullien’s arrival. Former Celtic boss Davie Hay thinks that the signing means that there is little chance Filip Benkovic returns to Celtic.

Benkovic had a successful loan spell at Celtic last season. Hay believes that the player is unlikely to return.

“Won’t be coming back”

“It also suggests…that Filip Benkovic, who did so well last season after joining on loan from Leicester City, won’t be coming back” Hay said, as reported by the Evening Times.

Interestingly, Benkovic has suggested that he would be open to a return to Celtic. That move would only happen if his parent club Leicester City agreed.

However, you would have to think that is unlikely to happen now that Jullien is at Celtic Park. Brendan Rodgers might also want to select Benkovic on a regular basis for Leicester next season.

If the Hoops hasn’t splashed out on Jullien, perhaps there would have been a chance of getting Benkovic back to the club. Unless something dramatically changes at Celtic, he won’t be returning anytime soon.
