Celtic great Davie Hay hopes that Jonny Hayes signs a new deal with the club. The Hoops utility man’s contract expires at the end of the season.
However, Hay, who won a host of trophies at Celtic as both player and manager, has made the case that Neil Lennon and the Hoops board should offer the player a new deal.
“More than deserves it”
“I would offer Jonny Hayes a new contract at Celtic as a matter of urgency. He more than deserves it. He has proven time and again to be a reliable performer when called upon” Hay said, writing in his column in the Evening Times.
“Yes, he may be 32 now, but I think he merits at least another year. He’s a bundle of energy, and he crosses a great ball too, so I think it’s a no-brainer to keep him around for another season.”
Neil Lennon might well agree with Hay’s comments, as he has selected Hayes for some big games this season. Most notably, the recent 2-1 win over Lazio in Rome. That is why it does seem likely that Hayes will sign a new deal with the club.
Could club offer player more than a one-year deal?
It is interesting that Hay seems to be advocating that the player signs a further one-year at Celtic. That might not be in the club’s plans. They may want to offer Hayes a two-year deal with the club. However, that is for the player and the club to sort out.
The fact that Hayes not only started the win against Lazio but kept his place in the side for the game against Motherwell shows that he is rated highly by Neil Lennon and the Celtic staff.
That might well indicate that a new deal for the player is in the works. However, as Hayes can talk to teams in January, perhaps the time is now to get a new contract secured.
