Davie Provan says Celtic can put Steven Gerrard “in bother”

Celtic great Davie Provan has slammed the club’s bitter rivals Rangers and has stated that the Hoops could leave Ibrox manager Steven Gerrard “in bother”.

Neil Lennon’s Celtic won 5-0 at home to St Mirren last night to go 16 points clear of Rangers. Granted, if the Ibrox side win their two games in-hand, the gap is narrowed down to 10. Even then, however, it’s still a chasm at this stage of the season.

Meanwhile, our rivals have totally capitulated after winning only four of their 10 domestic matches since returning from their winter break. They’re also out of the Scottish Cup too, with Celtic looking on course to secure a quadruple treble in just two months’ time.

Provan, speaking in his regular Scottish Sun column, has stated that Celtic could put Gerrard in trouble with a strong summer transfer window too, as he tipped the Rangers manager to head back down to England.

“If Steven Gerrard’s as bright as I believe, he’ll be out of Glasgow this summer. For all they can outplay Celtic over 90 minutes, they have a major character flaw. He shouldn’t put his neck on the line for them again.

“Getting shot of Morelos this summer would raise some cash towards a Rangers refit, but it will all come down to what Celtic do across town. If Lennon is allowed to tool up properly for another Champions League campaign, Gerrard will be in bother.

“The wise money should be on finding him back in England by then.”

Celtic coming close to running Gerrard out of Scotland

Celtic’s dominance will only be accepted by our rival’s supporters for so long. Gerrard, who has clearly progressed his Rangers team in Europe, is still an absolute disaster on the domestic front.

You have to wonder what other managers would be getting away with this. Gerrard is close to losing six trophies out of six to Celtic. Who else in world football would get away with such constant failure? Regardless of whether his side has better quality or not than a few years ago, the fact is he’s had more than enough money to buy it.

Over the last two transfer windows, Gerrard has spent over £10m (Transfermarkt). Over the course of the 2018/19 campaign he also spent over £10m. That’s £20m he’s been given to spend yet still can’t get any closer to Celtic in the fight for the league title (Transfermarkt).

Celtic, at this stage, must be close to causing the Rangers board to lose patience with Gerrard. When that time comes, it’ll be a massive feather in our own cap to have effectively killed off their last big hope of stopping the 10.

Provan is spot on. Celtic have a chance to leave Rangers and Gerrard in huge trouble if we seal the quadruple treble and then have a morale-boosting summer in terms of incomings. But who would bet on the Ibrox boss still currently being there regardless? After all, it’s like we said – come the summer, he’ll have likely lost six trophies out of six. Their standards have fair dropped if that’s suddenly deemed good enough at Ibrox.
