"Definitely not a yes man"; Promising comments emerge on Postecoglou to Celtic
Australian international defender Ryan McGowan reckons Ange Postecoglou can be a success at Celtic and in Scotland.
McGowan played under the prospective Celtic boss when he was national team manager, also featuring for Hearts and Dundee United in the Scottish top-flight.
He’s as well-placed as anyone to hold an opinion on the Celtic links to the 55-year-old and comments given to the BBC are very interesting.
One of the big concerns some Celtic fans have is that Postecoglou is just going to be another yes man that will be dictated to by the club board.
However, McGowan is insistent that won’t happen.
He told BBC Scotland: “If fans do some research on his style and approach, I’m pretty sure they’ll be happy. He has had success everywhere he’s been and he’s definitely one of the best coaches that I’ve worked with. I’m pretty sure, if Celtic get him, that he’ll do a very good job there.
“He’s definitely not a yes man. He left Australia four months before the World Cup. He wasn’t happy with some of the decisions taken above him and so he walked away. I have no doubts he will be setting his demands in terms of what he wants from the job and, if Celtic don’t match that, he won’t take it on.
“All of his teams play exactly the same way. It’s a possession-based style, with the emphasis on scoring as many goals as possible. He’s not a coach that sits back on a 2-0 lead.
“He’s implemented that style everywhere he’s gone, although it’s taken a bit longer at some clubs. This will be the best group of players he’s worked with, so he’ll be able to get that going pretty quickly.”
Celtic still to provide details on structure and coaching team
It appears that Postecoglou will be striving for the best as Celtic boss, which is obviously the kind of character we need in the job.
Our new manager could well have a different relationship to the Celtic board than others have had in the past, with the club expected to appoint a sporting director that oversees the whole football department.
The club are yet to provide details on that, and it’s long overdue. That’s one of the concerns that many have fans right now – just what is going to happen after putting all our eggs in the Howe basket?
And will Postecoglou fit seamlessly into that? It sounds like he’s had run-ins with authority before. It’s all part of the unknown as we await further news on the next Celtic era.
Still, I’m heartened by what McGowan had to say. The more I find out about Postecoglou, the calmer I am, even it can’t be denied it’s a massive risk.
