Dembele and Johnston injuries show just how threadbare Celtic squad still is

The Celtic fans have been ruing Ange Postecoglou’s pre-Midtjylland update on Karamoko Dembele and Mikey Johnston respectively.

The Hoops boss provided an update on both Celtic youngsters yesterday. Postecoglou would reveal that, after coming off in the friendly against Bristol, both men would need “significant rehab” and that they wouldn’t be back in any less than a month.

The news has absolutely ripped into Celtic’s plans to face Midtjylland tonight. With Liel Abada not making the squad and James Forrest still building up his fitness levels, Dembele’s absence is a major blow.

Things aren’t any better over on the left down Johnston’s side. Celtic have literally no natural options to play in the position. Adam Montgomery could potentially play an advanced role tonight with Greg Taylor behind, but even that is a sign of how threadbare we are.

It’s a grim look that an injury or two appears to rock us so badly at the moment. If anything is a sign of the much-needed addition to our squad depth, it’s that.

Dembele and Johnston will get their Celtic opportunities in time

Postecoglou, as we know, is a big fan of youngsters who have the talent. Nobody can look at Karamoko or Mikey and say they don’t have that.

In fact, Dembele and Johnston are arguably our most exciting of the young players currently at the club. As soon as they’re back, their talent will be demanding that they be considered for first-team football this season.

Celtic may look at the right side and say they’re covered with Dembele, Abada, and Forrest. But on the left flank, an addition is needed before the closure of the summer window.

Mohamed Elyounoussi is one of many Celtic players that just haven’t been replaced. If Johnston is to be a regular from this season onwards, then at the very least he needs some competition. Something Dembele will feel the force of when he returns to action.

But for now, the Celtic supporters have been left gutted by Postecoglou’s update heading into tonight’s UCL match against Midtjylland.
