Derby County want to sign former Celtic centre-back Filip Benkovic on loan this January, according to a report.

The Telegraph say that the Rams are keen to bring the Croat to Pride Park for the remainder of the season. Derby are struggling in 17th in the English Championship under new boss Phillip Cocu, but they’re said to have made signing Benkovic a “priority” next month.

The defender is yet to feature under Brendan Rodgers at Leicester City despite the Northern Irishman taking him on loan at Celtic last season. There have also been murmurings that a return to Glasgow could be on the cards but there’s been nothing concrete to back any chat up as of yet.

Celtic should swoop to beat Derby to Benkovic loan signing

Benkovic was a bit of an unsung hero during his time at the club last season. Clearly immensely talented, he got off to a great start before his time petered out a little following injuries and the departure of Rodgers to Leicester.

Given our lack of cover in defence, many would see the possibility of bringing Benkovic back to the club as one worth taking. He knows the setup well having worked under Neil Lennon and with the vast majority of the current first-team squad. He could provide some really good back-up for Christopher Jullien and Kristoffer Ajer who are developing together with every passing game.

Both have become stalwarts at the back but we would suffer if either were to miss a game due to injury or suspension. Both Nir Bitton and Hatem Abd Elhamed have filled in at centre-back already this season but it is neither’s primary position.

Jack Hendry, meanwhile, is far out of contention and Lee O’Connor is seen as more of a right-back going by his appearances for the development team.

That means that there should be room for a centre-back this January. And if Benkovic is on the market why wouldn’t we move for him?
