Celtic have given Derry City assurances over a future friendly, according to the Brandywell side’s manager Declan Devine.

Neil Lennon’s men were set to face the League of Ireland side this Saturday, before the FAI pulled the plug on the fixture due to Covid-19 travel restrictions.

Devine admits it’s “disappointing” the match won’t go ahead, but says that Celtic want to reschedule for some time in the coming months.

“It was a brilliant opportunity which was put to us by Celtic,” he told the Derry Journal.

“We did all our business as clean as a whistle and Celtic were very impressed with how we went about our side of things in preparation for the game.

“We all went and got tested and did everything by the book and then at the last minute the FAI wouldn’t sanction it as far as I know.

“It’s disappointing but at the same time, Celtic have given us an assurance they will have us over at a time that suits in the coming months.”

When will Celtic fit in Derry clash?

The Celtic board have showed their class with this move.

Derry City were clearly pretty excited by the prospect of playing us, and they may have feared their hopes were over after the FAI’s intervention.

The fact that they will still get to travel over to Glasgow at some stage is positive for both parties.

You just wonder how we’re going to fit in the extra fixture.

We’re already scheduled to play games in five competitions this coming season – if you include both last season and this season’s Scottish Cup.

It’s gonna be pretty hectic so the match against Derry City may end up being an outing for some fringe players.

Or perhaps the match will be kicked into next season. That would seem to make the most sense.
