Frank McAvennie has not held back as he slammed ‘terrible’ Celtic for ‘rolling over’ at Tannadice in the defeat to Dundee United.
Celtic’s defeat to Dundee United was probably one of the worst performances fans have seen under interim boss Martin O’Neill.
But for McAvennie, the former Celtic striker slammed his old club after he branded their performance ‘terrible’ as he sent the Bhoys a title warning O’Neill cannot ignore.
Should Martin O’Neill take some of the blame for the loss to Dundee United?
McAvennie slams Celtic’s gutless stars vs Dundee United
The fallout of the Tannadice defeat continues, and it’s not just Celtic fans who are angry as McAvennie slams the Hoops’ performance at Tannadice.
McAvennie told STV Sport: “If Celtic are going to lose the title, they can’t lose it like they did last week.
“I was disgusted by the way the players just rolled over and got their bellies rubbed. It was terrible.
“I know the pitch was terrible but both teams had to play on it. That’s the worst I’ve seen it at Tannadice, which is normally quite good. That was a one-off.
“I was holding my breath every time Celtic passed it along the back line, but they just kept repeatedly doing it.
“There was no fight and they just accepted it.”
He added: “Hearts will drop points and so will Rangers. But Celtic are by no means the best football team in the league.”
Despite dominating the game with 73.8% of possession, Celtic still allowed Dundee United to have 19 shots on goal, the most any team outside of Rangers has achieved this season.
The Tannadice club also threatened Celtic’s goal more from outside the box with nine attempts compared to the Bhoys’ four.
Celtic were forced into a defensive battle after winning 19 duels to United’s 17. Despite their domination, the Parkhead club were toothless in attack and that is something that is not acceptable to the fans.
Celtic have seven games to save their season
The most stinging part of McAvennie’s criticism? That Celtic are not the best footballing team in the country.
Fans have been used to seeing the Hoops dominate the domestic competition, and even third place does not mean they are the third-best team in the country.
| Position | Team | Played MP | Won W | Drawn D | Lost L | For GF | Against GA | Diff GD | Points Pts |
| 1 | 31 | 20 | 6 | 5 | 53 | 25 | 28 | 66 | |
| 2 | 31 | 17 | 12 | 2 | 56 | 26 | 30 | 63 | |
| 3 | 31 | 19 | 4 | 8 | 56 | 34 | 22 | 61 | |
| 4 | 31 | 14 | 12 | 5 | 49 | 23 | 26 | 54 |
Eight defeats this season is more than what Celtic have achieved over the last two campaigns and it shows just how far standards have fallen.
So if Celtic really want to save their bid for silverware, they need to start figuring out how to get out of the slump they are in or a rare and unacceptable trophyless end of season awaits O’Neill and his team.
