Dominic McKay reportedly closing in on Celtic Director of Football appointment

Dominic McKay is closing in on a new Celtic Director of Football appointment, according to the Daily Record.

There had been fears that the prospect of a new DoF had gone out the window. Given the lack of progress or updates on the matter, it had seemed as though the Hoops had potentially changed their minds.

However, the Record reports that the appointment of a new manager has taken priority. With Howe to be unveiled before the end of the week, it looks as though that box is finally going to be ticked.

The newspaper believes that McKay could also announce a new DoF as part of the club’s rebuild this summer. And they report that he’s closing in on an announcement regarding the important position.

In recent days, it’s been reported that Richard Hughes will be arriving from Bournemouth to team up with Howe [Daily Record]. What his role would be hasn’t been confirmed, but Howe was said to have wanted him as his DoF in recent months.

The truth is that Celtic don’t have time to mess about this summer. As soon as Howe is appointed, the DoF needs to be in the door almost immediately behind him.

In truth, it’s a touch odd that the managerial appointment has taken precedence. Usually, it’s the DoF or sporting director that comes in first in order to aid with the managerial search.

But it does look, from the outside, that Celtic are going for an unusual set-up. They’re going for a manager-director of football partnership that seems to have been set up solely for Howe. Hopefully, that doesn’t come back to bite us in the long term. It’s important that whoever takes on that upstairs role is here for the long-term.

The sooner we get all of our eggs in order the better. With a big summer of recruitment ahead, it would be ideal to get the DoF involved in that in some capacity. Especially considering we don’t know what his long-term philosophy for the club will be.

But it looks as though we haven’t to expect anything until Howe is, at the very least, in the door. No specific date has been given as to when we can expect a DoF.

Here’s hoping it won’t be too long. If we can get everything in place over the coming week, that would be a tremendous boost for supporters.
