Former Celtic goalkeeper Dorus de Vries will be amongst those who benefit from a push by beer company Budweiser to commemorate Lionel Messi’s record goalscoring stint at Barcelona.
As reported by The Daily Mail, Budweiser are sending a commemorative beer to every goalie who conceded one of the Argentinian’s 644 goals for the La Liga giants.
The attacker’s goal against Valladolid on Tuesday broke the record for the number of goals scored at a single club, overtaking Brazilian icon Pele.
Each beer will be sent to the goalkeepers and numbered in the order he scored in the sequence up to 644.
And a few Celtic goalkeepers will be on the list.
Artur Boruc, Craig Gordon and Fraser Forster have all conceded goals to Messi over the years.
However, it’s De Vries who’ll receive the biggest Christmas bonus of the Celtic group.
De Vries’ Celtic pain
He conceded a hat-trick to Messi in a 7-0 thrashing back in the 2016/17 Champions League. It’s a night that Celtic fans like to forget for obvious reasons.
De Vries himself even admitted it was a night that scarred him, telling The Daily Record in 2018: “I think that will take a couple of years to heal up, that one, because I am a winner, I want to win,” he said.
“My daily routine is to make sure I perform every single day. That’s how I approach my job and it is still the sorest point in terms of I hate losing, I can’t stand it.
“It doesn’t matter whether it is Barcelona or Partick Thistle, you want to win. Simple. It was a disappointing night in terms of the result, of course. It was really hard to take on board that you conceded goals, even if you concede one it is always hard to take as a goalkeeper because you don’t want to concede any goals.”
Perhaps he won’t be too eager to receive these beers then.
However, his total of three conceded to Messi pales in comparison to some of the Argentinian’s foes over the years.
Goalkeeper Iker Casillas will receive a massive 17, while former Valencia goalie Diego Alves is thought to hold the record at 19.
It’s not that bad then Dorus!
