Celtic forward Leigh Griffiths phoned Chris Sutton in the aftermath of the Hoops’ heavy 4-1 loss to Sparta Prague.
The Scotland international bagged our goal in the awful defeat – but then came in for some heavy criticism from Sutton on BT Sport’s post-match coverage.
Speaking on the same channel’s Scottish Football Extra a day later, Sutton revealed Griffiths had contacted him following his outburst.

“I’m not going to divulge. It’s a private conversation”, Sutton said of the hostile call on BT Sport 2. (Friday, 18:25)
“It’s a crime when you have that much talent and you can’t be bothered. And that’s what’s happened.

“My advice to Leigh would be to do his talking on the pitch.

These kind of things will go on a lot in modern football. The difference is that we don’t usually hear about them.
But news travels fast nowadays and Celtic fans were soon having their say on the apparent spat between the two.
Can’t help but think Chris was scrambling around for scapegoats to deflect from the repeat failings of his mate. https://t.co/DZ68V8NPbW

Sutton was bang on. Griff’s at least a stone overweight…

I don’t care if he’s a stone over weight if he scores plenty for us, Would Sutton be giving commons abuse in this scenario?

This season is going not far off as bad as could be possible https://t.co/lagg8lz8vW

Sutton was quick to fillet ronnie diela on a weekly basis, but hasn’t said a word about Lennon. Smacks of double standards from him.

I’m usually on the same page as Sutton… not sure about his charge on Griff. I think maybe Suttong himself ‘lost it’ a wee bit last night.

Griffiths well within his rights to, @chris_sutton73 made an absolute embarrassment of himself with his comments post match yesterday, trying to place the blame anywhere but in his mates lap. https://t.co/5EEjzbim31

Sutton looking for someone else to blame rather than his mate Lennon!

Scapegoated Griff & Moi to avoid criticising Lennon

To be fair, Sutton was critical of Lennon on Friday
Many of the above comments focus on the same issue.
That is Sutton refusing to call out his old team-mate Lennon for his side underperforming.
As we told you earlier, the Englishman was actually critical of Lennon during the same BT show.
Yet, the majority of his anger seemed to be vented at Griffiths, and also Mohamed Elyounoussi for his phone incident.
With so many players underperforming, Sutton could really have had his pick on Thursday night.
Let’s see what Sunday brings.
Griffiths will just be glad the game is on Sky Sports.
