Draw vs Dons won’t cost Celts title, but may cost Lennon permanent job

Neil Lennon’s hopes of landing the Celtic job full time took a hit after the Hoops’s 0-0 draw with Aberdeen at Celtic Park.

With Rangers drawing at Hibs on Friday, Saturday should have seen Celtic kill off any lingering hopes of an Rangers revival.

However, like they’ve done all season, Celtic seem to refuse to shut the door completely on their rivals.

Lennon told The BBC after the game that his squad were ‘physically fatigued’ after their recent fixtures.

The interim boss was drafted in quickly after Brendan Rodgers left for Leicester. He deserves credit for taking the team on at such short notice.

However, his short-lived honeymoon period is over and fans were not happy with the blank against the Dons.

Lennon’s hopes of nailing the job full time hinge on his ability to deliver a treble treble for the club.

However, Saturday’s showing reminded fans of Lennon’s last season during his first reign at the club.

Celtic were uninspiring in the draw and pretty much gifted Aberdeen the point they came to Glasgow for.

The team looked flat for large parts of the game, and never looked like getting a late winner.

Despite two late winners in recent games, it looked a step too far for the Bhoys against Aberdeen.

Lennon’s decision to drop Odsonne Edouard backfired. So much so that Lennon had to draft in Celtic’s record signing at the beginning of the second half.

With Celtic looking desperate for a winner to send them 10 clear of Rangers, Lennon looked in vain for the answer.

There’s still a battle to be won

If anything, the draw against the Dons should help refocus the Bhoys for the run in.

It is without doubt an opportunity missed, but it shouldn’t cost them the league title in the end.

However, if there are more flat and lethargic showings like the fans saw on Saturday, Lennon won’t land the job full time.
