The first name that came to mind for Shane Duffy when asked for a list of his Celtic idols was former hard-hitting defender Bobo Balde, speaking his first press conference as a Bhoys player today (Celtic YouTube).
Duffy, as we know, has followed Celtic as a proud Derry native all his life.
Like anyone growing up watching the Scottish champions in the late 90s and early 2000s, the stars of Martin O’Neill’s era shine brightest and Duffy appears to have loved the defending style of Balde most of all.
Asked by a reporter who his idols were as a young player learning his trade, Duffy couldn’t get Bobo’s name out of his mouth quick enough as someone he tries to emulate, laughing with journalists in the room.

As quoted by Celtic’s YouTube channel, he said: “Big Bobo! Big Bobo.
“I’ve followed Celtic all my life and I was lucky enough to get managed by Alan Stubbs and I used to ask him questions every day about it, probably did his head in.
“There’s been loads over the years, the years of Henrik and all sorts. Martin O’Neill’s team, he gave me my debut for Ireland and he was a successful manager when he was here so there’s been loads.”
Balde had a fierce reputation as a Hoops player, known for his tough tackling and physical style.
If Duffy can add that kind of aggression to Neil Lennon’s backline then we are onto a winner this season.

Chants of ‘Bobo’s gonna get ye’ would often be heard ringing around Celtic Park when he played.
Will Duffy get the same treatment when fans return to Paradise?
Hopefully the Irish captain can become as much of a cult hero at the club.
In other news, Duffy has admitted he was blown away by the response of fans to his signing.
