Dundee United release statement on Celtic fixture delay; SFA could have big decision to make

We’ll have to wait until Friday to find out the details of Celtic’s fixture away to Dundee United in the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup, the Tannadice club revealed today.

The dates and broadcast details of Hearts vs St Mirren, BBC One 7:45pm on March 12th, and Motherwell vs Hibs on the same channel the next day at 12:30pm were announced earlier this afternoon.

However, the participation of Celtic and Rangers in European competition has meant the date and kick-off time of our quarter-final fixture, due to be shown live on Premier Sports, have been delayed.

Dundee United explained on their official website: “We have been informed by the Scottish FA that it will likely be Friday before we know the date and time of the Scottish Cup quarter-final versus Celtic.

“Discussions are ongoing between Scottish FA and broadcasters and further to this, the parties are also awaiting the outcome of European ties this week as potential future EURO fixtures will also shape the decision making process. At this point, we believe that the fixture will either take place Sunday afternoon or Monday evening. Saturday evening has been ruled as an option on the advice of police.

“We know fans are keen to have this information and appreciate and thank you for your patience while the parties involved make their decision.”

The tie is sandwiched in between both legs of the next rounds in the Europa and Conference League knockout stages, played on Thursday nights.

I don’t imagine either Celtic or Rangers would fancy a Monday night game if they make it through.

If the two teams progress the Scottish FA have an unenviable decision to make.

Both games can’t be played on the Sunday because police will not want Celtic and Rangers fans in Dundee on the same day, with Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s outfit due at Dens Park.

If either team exits Europe this week then expect them to be playing away from home in Dundee on that Monday night.

It’s not much of a surprise the decision has been put off until Friday when plenty of complaining is a potential outcome.

In other news, Celtic have the chance to pile pressure on with 6-point lead before rivals play next.
