Dundee Utd boss sounds like he could prioritise Ross County "cup final" over Celtic

Dundee United boss Tam Courts has labelled Saturday’s game against Ross County as their “cup final” despite hosting Celtic in a crucial game on Wednesday night.

As we all know, Ange Postecoglou will take the title officially with at least a point from Saturday’s game. However, at the same time, United could effectively seal European football with a win at Tannadice. Victory over the Hoops would likely be enough given rivals Motherwell and Ross County would then have to beat Celtic and Rangers respectively.

But despite that, it sounds as though Courts is already preparing for a final day battle with the Staggies to see who gets into Europe. Motherwell, meanwhile, will be at Celtic Park on trophy day in what should prove far too difficult a task for them.

And as he spoke about his side’s 2-0 defeat at Ibrox yesterday, Courts appeared to hint that Saturday is the bigger game for his team.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Courts said: “We move on to Wednesday and we’ve got a huge game against Ross County on Saturday. It’s still in our hands. I think we’re still going to be required to go to Dingwall on Saturday and win. So I think the key thing for me is making sure that we have a positive week.

“Disappointing to lose today and we need a big performance on Wednesday night as a platform to then go on to the match in Dingwall. But I think we’re all accepting that come Saturday that that’s going to be the cup final for us essentially.

“So as long as we go in feeling confident, feeling good about ourselves, then I still fully back ourselves to finish in 4th position.”

Dundee United may be about to use Celtic fixture to prep for Ross County

Make no mistake about it, come kick-off on Wednesday night, United will be in Celtic’s faces and looking to bag 3 points. They’ll understand how big the occasion is for the Hoops and will undoubtedly be doing their best to deny us a title party.

However, at the same time, the last thing they need is any injuries before Saturday. At the moment, United sit a point clear of Motherwell and 3 clear of County. It’s unlikely the latter beat Rangers this Wednesday whilst Motherwell are also huge underdogs to beat Hearts and Celtic in their final 2 fixtures.

Chances are that 3 points for United this Saturday will be enough to get them 4th spot and a place in Europe. That’s the end goal for the Tannadice club and they won’t want to go into Saturday feeling too drained.

If they put their heart and soul into Wednesday night yet still come out second best, they could go up to Dingwall with some tired legs in their squad. Especially considering all of the running they had to do at Ibrox yesterday.

Ange Postecoglou, of course, won’t be paying much attention to United’s preparations. The last thing on his mind will be whether they put their all into this one ahead of Saturday. He’ll be expecting the Arabs to come out firing and look to spring a shock.

Celtic have won 3-0 on 2 separate occasions at Tannadice this season. Fingers crossed we’re ready for the same again.
