Former Celtic midfielder Dylan McGeouch is reportedly “in talks” over a return to Scottish football with Aberdeen.

The Evening Express report that the 26-year-old is set to leave Sunderland for the Dons in a deal that is “set to be concluded today.” McGeouch has been down south since leaving Hibernian in July 2018, where he enjoyed some success under current Hoops boss Neil Lennon.

The Northern Irishman had the midfielder at Celtic too and handed him his first-team debut in 2011. McGeouch went on to enjoy a frustrating time at Parkhead, although he did score a memorable solo goal in a rout of St. Mirren.

Dons boss Derek McInnes is said to be a long-term admirer of the player.

McGeouch will boost a team like Aberdeen

Signing McGeouch would be a pretty decent coup for Aberdeen. The midfielder may have enjoyed a bit of a frustrating time of late but he showed enough in his time at Hibernian to suggest he could perform well in the Premiership.

Much has been made of the real gulf in quality between ourselves, Rangers and the rest of the league but signings like McGeouch will at least help to bridge the gap a little.

We could really do with teams like Aberdeen upping their game against the Gers as, otherwise, we’ll have to win the remaining derby matches to be assured of another title.

It is encouraging to see decent players like McGeouch coming back up to Scotland rather than being wasted in the lower leagues of English football.

Now hopefully Celtic can do a bit of January business and boost our own chances.
