Emilio Izaguirre reveals big update on his Celtic future

Emilio Izaguirre’s future at Parkhead looks to be in real doubt after his latest reveal.

The Honduran signed for Celtic for a second time last summer on a one-year contract. Since then, however, he’s struggled to make any form of impact, making 19 appearances but struggling for form throughout.

Izzy has also had to deal with competition from Jonny Hayes as well as Tierney. With Hayes’ performances this season, it’s safe to assume that Izaguirre is now third-choice.

But despite that, the left-back has confirmed that Celtic have indeed offered him a new contract. And speaking in the Daily Record, he also revealed that he isn’t keen on accepting it.

“Celtic have offered me another one-year deal on my contract. I don’t know what I am going to do yet. I am discussing it with my family.

“Neil Lennon has spoken to me and he wants me to remain at Celtic. But I want to be closer to Honduras when I play with the national team.

“I hope something comes up in the MLS for me. That’s the wish of me and my wife. So my future is difficult to predict. My agent is dealing with it at the moment and when I return to Honduras in the summer, I will decide.”

No need to extend the contract

Celtic surely have enough cover as it is for left-back next season. If Izzy was to leave Parkhead, we would have Tierney, Hayes, and Andrew Gutman who will join for next season.

It will also be interesting to see whether any potential new manager wants to improve in that position too. There doesn’t seem to be much of a necessity for us to keep the Honduran in truth.

Izaguirre has already confirmed that this is pretty much a Neil Lennon decision. Considering the Hoops boss has also been linked with a move to Gary Hooper, and also wants to keep Mikael Lustig, it feels like Lennon is looking to get the old guard together.

Leaving is probably the best decision Izzy could make too. He likely won’t ever be first-choice here again, and a move to somewhere like the MLS could help him keep his international ambitions intact.

He’s featured four times for Honduras this season, but needs to keep himself match-sharp in the coming years. It would hardly be surprising if Izzy’s association with the Hoops ended for good this summer.
