England boss admits Celtic star still gives him nightmares
England boss Gareth Southgate has admitted he still sees the glorious free-kicks of Celtic star Leigh Griffiths in his sleep ahead of tonight’s mammoth clash against Scotland.
Griffiths’ famous double against England in 2017 put Scotland on the brink of victory at Hampden, before the visitors scored a last-gasp equaliser.
It was one of the most memorable internationals in recent years.
Southgate refused to say whether he’s happy Griffiths isn’t in the Scotland squad or not. However, the striker’s efforts that day are a reminder to him anything can happen at Wembley this evening.
As quoted by The Scottish Sun, he said: “I still see those goals going in my sleep sometimes! They were two incredible free kicks. We know that any team can score against you. They can have those moments.
“The moments of quality from that day can be replicated on Friday. Anything can happen in a football match and you have to react. We did that day. We came back to get the draw.
“When we’ve gone behind in matches, we’ve found a way to win or get draws. We have to be prepared for anything. The way we react to setbacks is crucial.”
Griffiths will be watching on with the rest of the nation tonight. Scotland badly need an unlikely point, at least, to keep their Euro 2020 hopes alive.
A number of Celtic players past and present will be involved including Kieran Tierney, Ryan Christie, Callum McGregor and James Forrest.
It should be quite the occasion regardless of the result, though I am hoping for a Scotland victory!
Can one of the Celtic-forged players steal the headlines?
