South Africa v Canada, Alistair Johnston

Johnston’s Canada picked up four points during the group stages, including losing to Switzerland, which proved costly because it means Jesse Marsch’s side will play on the road for the knockouts.

Canada will be the first ones out of the blocks when they lock horns with South Africa on Sunday.

Brazil v Japan, Daizen Maeda

Daizen Maeda scored for Japan against Sweden to head into the knockout stages on a high. It has probably boosted his chances of starting.

But it’s a mouthwatering contest for neutrals because Japan face Brazil, and this is Celtic star’s chance to show the world what he is capable of.

France v Sweden, Benjamin Nygren

Perhaps the Celtic player facing the toughest test is Benjamin Nygren. After starting Sweden’s first two group matches – a 5-1 win and a 5-1 defeat, he was benched for the final group match against Japan.

Given that Newcastle United winger Anthony Elanga came in for his place and impressed, expect Nygren to start from the bench against the attacking might of the French.

United States of America v Bosnia-Herzegovina, Auston Trusty

Another player who ended the group stages with a goal was Auston Trusty.

Though not a guaranteed starter under Mauricio Pochettino, Trusty still did his chances more good than harm, despite the USMNT’s recent defeat to Turkey.
