Former Celtic star and fans-favourite Emilio Izaguirre has been caught up in horrific riots that stunned Honduran football last night.
Izzy’s Montagua were set to face Olimpia at the national stadium in the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa. Unfortunately, it’s been reported by the BBC that three people have been killed and 10 injured during the riots.

It all apparently started when stones were thrown at the Montagua bus. This led to shards of broken glass everywhere and three players being injured. Izzy was unfortunately one of those players.
Interestingly, Montagua has openly blamed the Ultra-Faithful Olimpia fan club for the devastation. The club tweeted about the incident officially last night.
Izaguirre only recently rejoined his hometown club after a one-year spell at Parkhead came to an end.
Fortunately, the former Celtic man was quick to update supporters on how he was feeling later on in the evening. Izzy posted on his Instagram story and thanked supporters for the good wishes he had received. He was sporting a bandaged eye in the photo too.
There were more than 10,000 people already in the stadium when the trouble started brewing, according to the BBC. As well as that, police had to fight off a stampede of supporters with tear gas.

It was all nasty stuff, and a poor show for Honduran football to have to release to the world. It doesn’t reflect well on their supporter groups at all.
Izzy seems to be okay, but tragedy strikes elsewhere
Fortunately, however, Izzy seems to be healing up nicely. The other two players who were injured in the bus attack were Roberto Moreira and Jonathan Rougier respectively. All three were treated in hospital after the incident (BBC).
It will be interesting to see what action gets taken towards Olimpia and their ultra group after the ridiculousness of last night.

Having three people die at a football match is an absolute tragedy, and shows the nasty limits some are willing to go to, regardless of whether the deaths were accidental or not.
As for Izzy, it looks like he’ll make a full recovery in what must have been a terrifying incident for the left-back, his team-mates, and all decent fans who attended.
