Ex-Celtic manager handed tricky Europa League draw; includes trip to Old Trafford

Former Celtic duo Neil Lennon and Adam Matthews will be making the trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United in the Europa League this season.

Currently, both Lennon and Matthews find themselves out in Cyprus after reuniting at Omonoia FC during this summer’s transfer window.

The ex-Celtic manager took the role at his current club back in March, signing a two-year deal and marked his return to the dugout after his Parkhead departure the year previous.

Lennon guided Omonoia to safety in the Cypriot top flight before leading them to cup silverware, defeating relegation strugglers Achnas in the Cyprus Cup final.

After lifting that trophy, Omonoia was rewarded with European group stage football, entering the qualification process at the Europa League play-off round.

Of course, the Northern Irishman is well aware of the qualification process from his time and Celtic, and he looked to recruit new additions for his squad ahead of that test.

Included in his new signings was a familiar face from his time at Parkhead, with Adam Matthews making the move to Cyprus after his recent departure from Charlton Athletic.

In order to achieve their place in the Europa League, Omonoia faced up against Belgian league side Gent, who they brushed aside, winning 4-0 on aggregate.

This afternoon, the draw for this season’s tournament took place, and Neil Lennon’s side were handed a tough draw against Manchester United, Real Sociedad and Sheriff Tiraspol.

Having already achieved a brilliant feat of qualifying for the Europa League, Lennon and Matthews have now also been rewarded with a trip to arguably one of the world’s most iconic football stadiums, Old Trafford.

Of course, both men have plenty of European experience from their time at Parkhead, and they will need to put it to full use at Omonoia after being handed a tough draw.

However, I am sure it is a test that the Cypriot side is looking forward to after their surprise qualification to Europe’s second biggest club competition.

It should certainly be interesting to see how they fare against some good European sides who have featured in the Champions League in recent years.
