Former Celtic midfielder Mark Fotheringham has been appointed as manager of English Championship side Huddersfield Town.

The 38-year-old has signed a three-year deal at the second-tier English side, having worked his way through the management ranks in both the UK and Germany.

Before taking up management, Fotheringham also had quite the playing career, which all started after coming through the Celtic academy system.

The midfielder made a handful of appearances during his time at the green and white Hoops, and at the time of his debut, he became the club’s youngest ever debutant when he was selected by interim boss Kenny Dalglish in 2000.

After his short spell as a Celtic player, Fotheringham went on to play for a further 13 clubs in several different countries across Europe, including Germany, Switzerland and Cyprus.

But the majority of his playing career was spent in Scotland, across a whole host of clubs.

The former Celtic man already has an impressive coaching CV, following his time spent in Germany with clubs such as Karlsruher and FC Ingolstadt.

Whilst he has spent his time working as an assistant coach, Fotheringham was briefly put into the spotlight during his time working as assistant with Felix Magath last campaign at Hertha Berlin.

After the experienced Magath contracted Covid in March, Fotheringham was placed as interim manager for the side’s fixture against Hoffenheim, where he led the team to a 3-0 victory.

There have been suggestions that the Celtic academy graduate could be closing in on his first permanent role as manager after he was interviewed for the job at fellow Bundesliga side VFL Bochum [Sun Sport].

Although that opportunity did not arise for Fotheringham, just a matter of weeks later, he landed his first head-management role as he was appointed as the new boss of Huddersfield Town.

In recent interviews, the ex-assistant coach has spoken about his dreams of going into management, even making suggestions that he could return to Scotland.

However, he has now been tasked with taking Huddersfield back to the promise land that is the English Premier League.

It is great to see ex-players making waves for themselves in management, particularly with Fotheringham taking a more untraditional route. We wish him all the best of luck south of the border!
