Former Celtic striker Robbie Keane has recently been nominated for a prestigious accolade by the MLS. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Major Soccer League, 25 players will be named as the Greatest ever to play in the competition.

Keane is one of 137 players who have been nominated for the accolade. Over 200 MLS experts will decide if Keane is one of the 25 Greatest players in MLS history. The winners will be announced on the 9th of December.

Won three titles in MLS

Keane had a spell at LA Galaxy after leaving Celtic, and he was phenomenally successful in the United States. He scored 105 goals in 170 appearances for the Galaxy. Keane won the MLS Cup three times and was named as the league’s most valuable player once in a six-year spell with Los Angeles.

Those numbers show that he is more than deserving of the nomination. Will he make the 25 man list though? That remains to be seen.

Keane’s time at Celtic was probably a disappointment to both the player and the fans, as the Hoops went to pieces under Tony Mowbray. However, it should still be pointed out that in 2009-10 he did end up as Celtic’s top scorer.

Performed well with the Hoops

That might say more about just how poor Celtic were that season, but Keane still ended up scoring 16 goals in 19 games for the Hoops. That is a very decent return.

Still, it is fair to say that Keane’s time at Celtic didn’t work for anyone. There is no doubt that Neil Lennon, starting his first full season as Hoops boss, would have loved to have kept him at the club. However, that was never likely to happen due to wages. He returned to Tottenham at the end of the season.

At least Keane, a well-known Celtic fan did go on to achieve great things in the MLS. He deserves credit for making that much of an impact in his time in America.

In other news, Mark Wilson, Murdo MacLeod and Simon Donnelly have identified what makes a good Celtic goalkeeper.
