Kevin Thomson’s latest comments about Celtic may annoy some Rangers supporters, but the former Ibrox midfielder was probably right.
There is obvious uncertainty around the Celtic squad heading into next season. Injuries, possible departures and transfer speculation have created concern among some supporters.
Even so, Thomson still believes Celtic are in a far stronger position than many critics are suggesting.
Jota will be out until at least October time 😢

Speaking about Celtic’s current situation on The Breakdown, Thomson said: “They could get huge money for someone like Engels, you know what I mean?
“Nygren could potentially go for decent money. His numbers are good. He splits opinion as well, but I’ve always thought people like Tounekti will be better next season.
“People don’t want players to have a settling-in period at Rangers or Celtic, you need to be brilliant as soon as you sign.
“I saw something pop up saying Jota wasn’t going to be fit for pre-season. I don’t know where Carter-Vickers is, but if you start to get Alistair Johnson back in the fold they’re not million miles away from having a really strong 11 still.
“Is Hatate going to go? Will that then give them money to invest? So I don’t think they’re as in a bad position as some Celtic fans would think.”
Kevin Thomson highlights Celtic’s financial strength
Thomson’s comments around Arne Engels are difficult to argue with. Celtic reportedly rejected bids worth up to £25 million for the Belgian midfielder last season, despite Engels only being in his first campaign at Parkhead.
The midfielder also produced seven goals and eight assists across all competitions, which only strengthens the argument that Celtic still possess some of the most valuable assets in Scottish football.
That is ultimately the biggest reason why Thomson believes Celtic remain strong. The club still has players capable of improving further while also carrying major transfer value.
Celtic fans fear decline, but rivals still fear them
There are genuine concerns around injuries. Jota is now expected to miss pre-season completely while Cameron Carter-Vickers is still working his way back from a long-term Achilles problem.
Even so, Thomson was right to point towards the return of Alistair Johnston. The Canadian defender remains one of Celtic’s most important players and his availability immediately improves the side.
Questions around Reo Hatate’s future will continue throughout the summer, but Celtic are not in a weak negotiating position given the midfielder remains under contract until 2028.
Thomson’s overall point was simple. Celtic do still need a lot of work this summer, but the foundations of a very strong spine are already there.
