On another night, Celtic might have drawn 3-3 with Bayern Munich at Parkhead.
From Nicolas Kuhn’s early disallowed curling effort to Daizen Maeda’s open goal miss, the Hoops certainly had their chances in their narrow 2-1 defeat to the Bundesliga giants in the Champions League.
Then there was the small matter of Arne Engels going down under a Dayot Upamecano challenge where the big defender stood on the Belgian’s toes.
VAR had a long look and urged referee Jesus Gil Manzano to head to the monitor for a check.
It was a lengthy one but ultimately ended with the whistler deciding it was not worth a spot-kick as Upamecano had played the ball before the follow through.
Former Scottish FA whistlers Des Roache and Steve Conroy, however, have now had their say and insist Celts should have been awarded a penalty for what was a clear foul.

Arne Engels should have had a Celtic penalty
“In our opinion, that’s a penalty.
“It doesn’t matter that the defender got the ball first, a foul is a foul,” they wrote on their X account for The Ref’s View.
“Stomping full on someone’s foot is not a “football motion”.
“We have seen similar this season being given; if it happens in midfield it is certainly a foul.”
It was a decision which would certainly have been a free-kick in the middle of the pitch.
The referee seemingly believed this time, somehow, that it was not worthy of a pen which would have dragged Celts back into the tie earlier.
Celtic’s Bayern Munich tie is still alive ahead of Allianz Arena leg
As it happened, Maeda did that himself with a header after difference-maker Yang put the ball on a plate inside the six-yard box.
For the penalty call, there were different opinions among the pundits watching the action, too.
Ex-Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart explained how he felt the ref had made the right call due to Upamecano’s touch which was eventually spotted on VAR.
However Pat Nevin was at odds with Hart’s opinion as he claimed it should have been a foul.
