Ange Postecoglou opened his Celtic press conference with a laugh out loud today after being asked about VAR for the umpteenth time in recent weeks.

As we all know, the technology is being introduced to Scottish football this weekend, starting with Hibernian vs St Johnstone tonight and then Celtic’s trip to Hearts tomorrow.

The Bhoys boss apparently couldn’t care less.

When asked if he’s looking forward to its introduction, Postecoglou laughed and said [Celtic YouTube]: “I’ve never seen so much excitement. Mate, I’m totally ambivalent to it. I think the best outcome for VAR this weekend is that we don’t use it, it means all the decisions are right.

“It’s not like it’s an exciting new signing. That stuff doesn’t rock my boat, mate. I know others are really excited by it, good luck to them. I doubt anyone is buying an admission ticket to see VAR this weekend, I think they’ll be there to watch the football – hopefully anyway.”

Remarkably he was asked a number of questions about VAR even after this response, with the Celtic boss reiterating that in his 16 months in Scotland, he’s very rarely talked about refereeing decisions.

No doubt he’ll be asked about it in pre-match interviews on radio and television tomorrow, despite making it clear he doesn’t have anything more to say on the subject.

Understandably VAR is a talking point for supporters and media, but if you’ve got all the responses you’re going to get out of a public figure such as Postecoglou, there is little value in continuing to pester him on the subject.

As Postecoglou alludes to, the benefit of VAR is supposed to be that these matters are discussed less in the end and hopefully it’s a quiet weekend on that front.

In other news, Ange Postecoglou goes into what “people on the outside” don’t see when making Celtic decisions.
