Coll Donaldson’s claim that VAR was ‘dodgy’ during Celtic’s win over Aberdeen does not stand up to the one fact that matters, Nygren was judged onside after review.
The decision caused a stir and some decent headlines during Celtic’s win at Aberdeen, even though the goal was checked and confirmed before Nygren restored the Hoops’ lead at Pittodrie.
There is no evidence that the VAR call was incorrect, but that hasn’t stopped Falkirk captain Coll Donaldson calling the decision ‘dodgy’.
VAR in Scottish football: incompetent refs, bad technology or both?
Celtic criticism lacks evidence beyond reaction
Donaldson described VAR as ‘dodgy’ while referencing the moment and broader concerns around decisions.
Donaldson told the STV Radio Football Show, “Some of the cameras do look a bit… there was one with Celtic up against Aberdeen recently.
“You watch it back and you think he’s off. And the longer it goes on… I don’t know if some of the camera angles are a bit dodgy.”
Celtic narrative risks drifting away from facts
Donaldson also referenced concern over VAR decisions, including the possibility of red cards influencing outcomes.
This is exactly how VAR is designed to operate in marginal situations where the naked eye cannot be definitive.
The confirmation of the goal reflects process and consistency rather than failure. Strong language without clear evidence risks shifting the focus away from what can be proven.
The only confirmed detail remains that Nygren was onside when the goal was scored. Donaldson’s frustration is clear, but without proof of the Celtic call being incorrect, the ‘dodgy’ label does not hold water.
