Celtic loanee concedes Wigan penalty vs Man Utd and fans are all saying the same thing

You may be forgiven if you’re struggling to remember who Celtic midfielder Liam Shaw is.

The 22-year-old was one of Ange Postecoglou’s first signings as Hoops manager more than two years ago and surprisingly, he’s still on the books at Parkhead.

Shaw has featured just twice for the Celtic first-team since 2021, clocking up a grant total of 74 minutes. He really doesn’t have a future under Brendan Rodgers and it wouldn’t be a shock to see him leave permanently in the summer despite having a contract until 2025.

The Sheffield native has spent time out on loan with Motherwell initially, before playing regularly for Morecambe last season. Wigan Athletic are now using his services on loan from Celtic and he was in action for the Latics in a big FA Cup game against Manchester United last night.

Shaw started in midfield for Shaun Maloney’s men and was up against the likes of Scott McTominay and Bruno Fernandes, the latter of whom was caught up in a controversial moment with the Celtic loanee after 72 minutes.

Fans react to Liam Shaw tackle

With the score at 0-0 and United pushing to break the deadlock, Shaw made a reckless looking challenge for the ball inside his own penalty area.

Fernandes had chopped to the outside with Shaw’s right leg scraping the foot of the United playmaker, who went down screaming for a spot-kick.

With no VAR in operation for the FA Cup clash, referee Anthony Taylor pointed to the spot. There was very minimal contact and the way Fernandes fell to the ground prompted many fans to vent their frustrations on social media.

Many defended Shaw, with one punter writing on X: “Imagine falling down like that.”

Another said: “Bruno pathetic diver man. Apologies lads”.

This viewer wrote: “That’s never a pen”.

While one fan shared: “How on earth is that a pen ref was stood right next to it”.

And this X user summed it pretty well: “Slight touch on his foot, but he went down holding his lower leg. Just shows what a he is all about doesn’t it”.

In fairness, Shaw was reckless and gave the referee a decision to make regarding the contact with Fernandes.

But it was extremely harsh on the Celtic outcast as Fernandes typically made a meal of it, even if there is an argument for a penalty kick being the correct call.

Shaw was then substituted not too long after, with United going on to score the penalty and progressing into the next round of the cup with a 2-0 victory at the DW Stadium.
