Filip Benkovic confirms his knee has fully recovered
Celtic have been given a big boost after Filip Benkovic’s injury has been confirmed to have healed up.
The big Croatian had his knee flare up at Ibrox. After failing to look comfortable throughout the contest, the big centre-back had to come off against Celtic’ foes in the 1-0 defeat last month.
It was a huge blow at the time. Celtic were struggling to stamp their authority on the game, and Benkovic’s injury ripped many of their defensive qualities out of the team.
Kristoffer Ajer was an able replacement on the day, but Benkovic remains a much more talented prospect.
Fortunately, however, Benkovic has confirmed that his injury has now healed up properly. Speaking in the Daily Record from Celtic’s Dubai base, Benkovic put to ease any concerns over his knock.
“My knee is good again. I had the problem for a few weeks in December but it’s OK again.
“I’ve trained as normal in Dubai, doing my rehabilitation and some extra work on my knee.
“I still feel it a little bit but I can do everything on the pitch. If it stays like this, everything will be fine. In hindsight, maybe I shouldn’t have played. But when you’re a footballer you want to play in every game – especially that one!”
Having Benkovic fully-fit is a huge boost
Many were looking forward to seeing how Benkovic would deal with Alfredo Morelos and Kyle Lafferty. Everyone knew if the Croatian was on his game then he would’ve bossed Rangers around.
Unfortunately, it’s clear his injury robbed him of the chance to do that, and at such an unfortunate time.
The Dubai training camp, however, has allowed Celtic to hit the reset button once again. It’s a fresh start for the entire squad including Benkovic, who now seems over his injury knock.
Having the Croatian fully-fit can’t be underestimated. Celtic are always at their most solid with him in the side, and therefore he can’t miss many more games in the second half of the season.
There obviously remains a slight concern given Benkovic can still feel a bit of pain. He doesn’t seem concerned about it though, and with another full week before Celtic return to action, there’s plenty of time for him to get to 100%.
All in all, this is huge news for Celtic.
