The Celtic fans were clearly delighted to hear that James Forrest is finally back in first-team training once again.

Forrest picked up an injury during a 3-2 win over Livingston at Parkhead back in September. The winger has been suffering from ankle problems and needed to undergo surgery back in November [Scottish Sun].

The decline since his absence began is frightening. Celtic haven’t had a single natural right-winger available to replace him, and that hasn’t helped our form.

When Forrest came off against Livingston, Celtic were top of the Premiership and getting ready for a massive run of fixtures. We were also full of hope ahead of an exciting-looking Europa League group. In addition to all that, we were also salivating at the prospect of a quintuple treble.

Fast forward five months and here we are. 21 points behind Rangers, out of Europe after finishing bottom of our Europa League group, and KO’d from the Betfred Cup by Ross County. With the Scottish Cup also not coming back anytime soon, it could be a grim campaign for the Bhoys.

Celtic fans left buzzing with as Forrest closes in on return

However, for the eternal optimists, Forrest’s return will help provide some added pressure onto Rangers. Last season, Forrest contributed a pretty insane 38 direct goal contributions. This was made up of 16 goals and 22 assists. Stunning [Transfermarkt].

Lennon has confirmed that Forrest won’t be ready to return for tomorrow’s game against St Mirren in Paisley [Glasgow Live]. However, with Celtic at St Johnstone on Sunday, many will have their eyes on that one for a potential return date. Even if it’s only in a cameo role.

For now, he’s only back in training. But even that’s a huge boost considering our lack of a goal threat down the right side. It only heightens the excitement for the Scotland international’s return.

And supporters have been showing their appreciation for Jimmy after today’s promising update. Here’s a look at how the Celtic supporters have reacted on Twitter:
