Fitness update on Moritz Jenz and Aaron Mooy ahead of Celtic vs Aberdeen
Ange Postecoglou has shared that Moritz Jenz and Aaron Mooy still aren’t quite in a position to start matches for Celtic as the duo build their fitness and match sharpness.
Both players arrived at the Bhoys after the squad had already completed a training camp in Austria and have only been in full training at Lennoxtown for a week.
And Ange has plans to get them up to speed ahead of a busier time of the season, along with Carl Starfelt.
Postecoglou told The Daily Record: “Moritz is fine and Carl had his first session back on Friday. He’s had all the ticks from the medical staff so was able to join in but Sunday is obviously too early for him. We’ll have some sort of bounce game in the next 10 days but he’s not too far away from being selected.
“Moritz is close too. Physically, he’s in a good place but he just hasn’t had the game time. We’ll try to get bounce games for him and one or two others like Carl and Aaron Mooy to make sure they’re ready. For our first three weeks, we’ve only got one game a week, which means we can manage the group through.
“But once we get to the last week of August, it will be three games a week right through to the break. We want everybody up and ready for what is ahead. So we will try to compensate for the guys who have not had enough game time in pre-season.”
It means that Stephen Welsh is almost guaranteed to feature alongside Cameron Carter-Vickers today, while Mooy’s action could be limited to substitute appearances for now.
We can’t take the early Scottish Premiership action for granted, so making sure that players aren’t being thrown in too early is prudent from Ange.
Both players will likely get plenty of minutes over the coming season with Starfelt aiming to be a regular week-to-week starter when he gets through the necessary training.
